A type B record contains details of a reported offence that was not cleared-up before being entered onto the system; a type C record contains details of an offence both reported and cleared-up before entry onto the system; a type D record is a clear-up that could not be matched to an associated offence record on entry. Additionally, Arrest and Victim records are represented by record types A and V respectively. No-crimes have record type N (elsewhere in the ME system, no-crimes are held in a separate file).

Metropolitan Police Area in which the offence was reported

In August 1994 the Metropolitan Police District was re- organised into the following numbered Areas, which are employed in this field:

• 1 Area (Central): City of Westminster, Royal Borough of Kensignton and Chelsea, and London Boroughs of Hammersmith and Fulham
• 2 Area (North West): London Boroughs of Camden, Brent, Harrow and Barnet, and the District of Hertsmere
• 3 Area (North and North East): London Boroughs of Waltham Forest, Redbridge, Enfield, Hackney, Tower Hamlets, Havering, Barking and Dagenham and Newham; the area of the former Urban District of Chigwell and the Parish of Waltham Holy Cross (Essex); the area of the former Urban District of Cheshunt and the Parish of Northaw (Herts)
• 4 Area (South East): London Boroughs of Southwark, Lewisham, Bromley, Greenwich, Croydon and Sutton
• 5 Area (South West): London Boroughs of Richmond on Thames, Hounslow, Wandsworth, Lambeth and Merton; Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames; District of Spelthorne and the area of the former Urban District of Esher (Surrey)

Metropolitan Police Division in which the offence was reported

Metropolitan Police Areas are divided into Divisions. Each Division is named after its Divisional Station (the administrative centre of the Division). The code for the Division is identical to the code for the Divisional Station. The interpretation of the codes for values in this field is based on:

• The codes for Metropolitan Police Stations given in the Police and Constabulary Almanac 1994: Official Register (Henley-on-Thames: R. Hazell and Company, 1994), pp. 32-34
• The List of Station Codes (CRDA/1/DD/3/3 and CRDA/1/DD/3/4) and the Specification of Borough Tables (CRDA/1/DD/3/5) supplied by the Metropolitan Police (see the Dataset Documentation Catalogue)
• Other guidance and information supplied by Metropolitan Police staff.

Home Office Classification Prefix

Information about the values in this field derives from discussions with MP staff familiar with the CRIS system.

Home Office Classification Code, comprising a 3 digit major code followed by a two-digit minor code.

A classification of the offence according to the scheme for classifying offences used by the Home Office (also known as HO Classes). The field comprises a three-digit major classification code representing a broad category of offence, and a two-digit subclass code, representing a specific offence within that category. In the ME Crime Statistics database the HO Class and HO Subclass are described as two separate fields, but are generally used in tandem when selecting records for reports based on type-of-offence. In the IDMSX database the two fields were grouped together to create a unique key for the HO-CODE entity. To facilitate access to the data, the fields have also been combined in the NDAD description.

In some cases only the subclass 00, 01 or " " is used within a major class, indicating that there is only one offence within the major class category. Records of No-Crimes, where the report or allegation may not be adequately clear to establish a precise offence, frequently use the major Home Office class only, recording the subclass as 00, 01 or " ".

The descriptions for the Home Office were derived from a document provided by the Metropolitan Police CRIS team. The reference for this document can be found in the Dataset Documentation Catalogue. The set of codes used in this dataset differs markedly from that used in CRDA/1/DS/1-6, notably in its format, although many codes are effectively the same. Although no information is available for a number of codes, a note has been inserted where it seems likely that a value may be part of a group of subclasses within a recognisable major class of offence.
