Summary

Title Vice-Counties Lookup Table
NDAD reference CRDA/17/DS/1/1/10
Scope & content Acts as a lookup table for values entered in the VCOUNTY field in the VCOUNTY table, providing the name of the Vice-County.

"The Vice-county System of Great Britain was devised in 1852 by Hewett Cotterell Watson as a means of graphically representing the distribution of plants. Watson defined 112 vice-counties of approximately equal areas based on sub-divisions of counties;Vice-county boundaries do not change like political boundaries so they allow for continuity both in interpreting historical records and for passing on the 'territory' between successive county recorders. The Vice-county System was adopted by the forerunners of the Botanical Society of the British Isles (BSBI) as a basis for organising their network of recorders and soon became popular for all forms of wildlife recording. Vice-counties remain the key organisational unit for the BSBI and many other national and local wildlife recording schemes.
