Scope and content

Explanatory notes relating to the two versions of the database held by NDAD. The notes were produced by the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys and its successor, the Office for National Statistics, for issue to purchasers of the database. The first document relates to version of database covering 1901-1992 (NDAD dataset CRDA/20/DS/1), while the second document relates to the redesigned version of the database, covering 1901-1995, which was issued by ONS in 1997 as 'Twentieth Century Mortality Files' (NDAD dataset CRDA/20/DS/2).

Relates to the 1901-1992 version of the database (NDAD dataset CRDA/20/DS/1). The original document is dated February 1985 but was updated with handwritten annotations at some point after 1986. Pages 11-12 are not present.

Explanatory notes accompanying the updated 1901-1995 version of the database, known as 'Twentieth Century Mortality Files' (NDAD dataset CRDA/20/DS/2). Revised and abridged from the notes accompanying the earlier version of the database (see CRDA/DD/20/DD/1/1). Metadata transferred with the original files indicates that this document was created in April-June 1997.

Scope and content

Claire Griffiths and Anita Brock, "Twentieth Century Mortality Trends in England and Wales". Article published in Office for National Statistics periodical Health Statistics Quarterly no. 18 (Summer 2003). It "examines trends in mortality over the Twentieth Century, using data from the ONS Twentieth Century Mortality CD-ROM." The version of the database used is the 1901-2000 version (not yet transferred to NDAD).

The 1901-1995 dataset (CRDA/20/DS/2) was transferred to NDAD in two Microsoft Access formats. This sub-series holds database definitions for the two Microsoft Access versions of the database, produced by NDAD using Access's Documenter utility.
