Summary

Title (B2) Incidence of invasive cervical cancer (ICD 180)
NDAD reference CRDA/24/DS/1992/5/10
Scope & content The following text has been taken from the 'Data Definition and User Guide' for this year (see the Dataset Documentation Catalogue).

Target number

B2

Target

To reduce the incidence of invasive cervical cancer by at least 20% by the year 2000 (from 15 per 100,000 population in 1986 to no more than 12 per 100,000).

Indicator title

Incidence of invasive cervical cancer

Definition

The directly age-standardised registration rate for cervical cancer (ICD 180) for women of all ages resident in each area.

Period covered

Cancers registered in 1985-87

Areas covered

England and Wales, England, Regional and District Health Authorities

Source

Each Regional Health Authority maintains a register of all cancers diagnosed. These registers are brought together into a national cancer registration scheme by OPCS. The data presented here are from the national register and relate to the District Health Authority of residence of cancer patients.

Method

A general description of the calculation of directly age-standardised registration rates presented in this data set is given in Appendix 2. The age groups used in the calculation of this indicator were 0-4, S-9, ...) 80-84, 85+.

The population figures used are the OPCS estimates of mid-year populations. These population estimates are based on the 1981 census) with allowance for subsequent changes (ageing, births, deaths and estimated migration).

Figures presented for each area are the age-standardised rate, the number of registrations in 1985-87, and an approximate 95% confidence interval for the rate (see Appendix 2 for the method of calculation).

Comments

The figure published for England as a whole in The Health Of The Nation White Paper was based on registrations in 1986 rather than the three year average.

Data on cancer registrations are available from the Regional Cancer Registries. Some regional registries may have updated their records since submitting them to the national register at OPCS. Queries about the figures for individual regions should be directed to the appropriate Regional Cancer Registries.

This indicator is not available for Family Health Services Authorities.
