Target number A2 Target To reduce the death rate for coronary heart disease in people aged 65-74 by at least 30% by the year 2000 (from 899 per 100,000 population in 1990 to no more than 629 per 100,000). Indicator title Mortality rates from coronary heart disease in persons aged 65-74 Definition The directly age-standardised mortality rate from coronary heart disease (ICD 410-414) for persons aged 65-74 resident in each area. Period covered Deaths registered in 1989-91 Areas covered England and Wales, England, Regional and District Health Authorities Source OPCS Method A general description of the calculation of directly age-standardised mortality rates presented in this data set is given in Appendix 2. The age groups used in the calculation of this indicator were 65-69, 70-74. The populations used are OPCS provisional mid-1991 population estimates based on the 1991 census. Figures presented for each area are the age-standardised rate, the number of observed deaths in 1989-91, and an approximate 95% confidence interval for the rate (see Appendix 2 for the method of calculation). These figures are presented separately for males, females and persons. Comments The figures published for England as a whole in The Health Of The Nation White Paper were based on deaths in 1990 and population estimates that were rolled-forward from the 1981 census. They were also not adjusted for age. Thus they differ slightly from the data presented here. Causes are based on the underlying cause of death. The figures presented relate to deaths registered in the calendar year) the time lag between the date of occurrence and the date of registration being usually only a day or two.
