MAFF National Food Survey

Method

The National Food Survey1 is a continuous survey based on a sample of approximately 7,000 randomly selected private households in Great Britain per year. Each participating household records details of all items of food brought into the home for human consumption during the course of a week.

The average percentage for 1988-90 represents the arithmetic mean of estimates made from the sample in each year.

Comments

The figure published for England as a whole in The Health Of The Nation White Paper was based only on the 1990 sample rather than the three year average.

The survey does not currently collect information on alcoholic drinks or confectionery consumed at home, or on snacks and meals bought and eaten outside the home.

For this indicator, regional data relate to the Standard Regions used for statistical purposes. These are based on County boundaries which are not in general co-terminous with Health Authority areas.
