Prevalence of alcohol consumption above sensible limits at ages 18 and over

Definition

The percentage of men consuming more than 21 units of alcohol per week and of women consuming more than 14 units per week at ages 18 and over.

Period covered

Source

OPCS General Household Survey

Method

The General Household Survey (GHS) is a continuous survey based on a sample of the general population resident in private households. Data presented here are from the 1990 survey, for which interviews were obtained with 18,384 people aged 16 and over throughout Great Britain between April 1990 and March 19911 .

Figures presented are the percentage whose average alcohol consumption exceeds sensible limits, the number responding to the question (the base), and the approximate 95% confidence interval around the percentage. These figures are presented separately for males and females

The calculation of confidence limits was based on the method described by Breeze, using an upper estimate of 1.2 as the multiplier needed to account for the complex sampling design of the GHS2.

Comments

Questions on alcohol consumption are included in the survey every second year and the 1990 sample contained the standard questions on this subject1. It was however the first for which tables could be produced by Health Authority.

The alcohol consumption rating used in the GHS is based on people's estimates of amounts drunk on a "usual" occasion. This amount is recorded in terms of five different types of drink and then converted into units of alcohol1.
