Summary

Title (B1) Mortality rates from breast cancer in women aged 50-69 (ICD 174)
NDAD reference CRDA/24/DS/1992/5/9
Scope & content The following text has been taken from the 'Data Definition and User Guide' for this year (see the Dataset Documentation Catalogue).

Target number

B1

Target

To reduce the death rate for breast cancer in the population invited for screening by at least 25% by the year 2000 (from 95.1 per 100,000 population in 1990 to no more than 71.3 per 100,000).

Indicator title

Mortality rates from breast cancer in women aged 50-69

Definition

The directly age-standardised mortality rate from breast cancer (ICD 174) for women aged 50-69 resident in each area.

Period covered

Deaths registered in 1989-91

Areas covered

England and Wales, England, Regional and District Health Authorities

Source

OPCS

Method

A general description of the calculation of directly age-standardised mortality rates presented in this data set is given in Appendix 2. The age groups used in the calculation of this indicator were 50-54, ...) 65-69.

The populations used are OPCS provisional mid-1991 population estimates based on the 1991 census.

Figures presented for each area are the age-standardised rate, the number of observed deaths in 1989-91, and an approximate 95% confidence interval for the rate (see Appendix 2 for the method of calculation).

Comments

The figures published for England as a whole in The Health Of The Nation White Paper were based on deaths in 1990 and population estimates that were rolled-forward from the 1981 census. Thus they differ slightly from the data presented here.

Causes are based on the underlying cause of death.

The figures presented relate to deaths registered in the calendar year) the time lag between the date of occurrence and the date of registration being usually only a day or two.
