Abstract
 | The Housebuilding Inquiry comprised data about the construction of new dwellings. It was collected by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM) and its predecessor departments; the survey was directed at the public and private sector. The information was collected from Local Authorities' Building Control Departments, and concentrated on starts and completions of all construction jobs. This information was combined with parallel data from the National House Building Council (NHBC), and thus used to provide estimates of all new housebuilding activity in the local authority area. This was key information for the Government and the media. Housebuilding starts were considered to be a key indicator of economic conditions generally, and about the construction industry and housing market in particular; while completions showed how the demand was being met and how they added to the nation's stock. |
